Since the initial days in March when Washington was the epicenter of COVID-19 infection in the United States, the use of masks and social distancing and the carefully gradual re-opening Phases seemed to be working to keep the disease in check.
No longer. Historic case rates and high positivity rates in Washington have become the norm since late September. The closing of in-dining for restaurants, indoor gym and movie theatres is a result of that new spike. And the problem is the same one everyone in the US had early on: hospitals maxing out of the available ICU beds and the rapid increase of COVID-19 hospitalizations in general. The lack of trained COVID-19 healthcare workers has long been a problem and those on the frontline are being pushed to the limit.
This week Dr. Kathy Lofy presented the data for the press regarding this crisis. The following are two short videos of her presentation.
